Why Go Organic? Reasons to Eat Organic Food

In this day and age where everything has to be bigger, better, faster, stronger and particularly, with the advent of genetically modified foods, people are starting to question the wisdom of hurrying and/or artificially controlling nature.

Organic Fruit and Vegetables

There is no doubt crops grow bigger and faster than they ever have before. But perhaps the agricultural revolution, a process which began over 200 years ago, may have gone too far. What kind of bodies are we building with our new "improved" food?

At Mrs Flannery's we fully endorse the organic movement. It is a positive move for both the planet and its inhabitants. Organic farming involves the long-term management and care of the land, so that the soil is left richer and more fertile with each passing season. It is farming which harvests produce with no toxic pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. It is the ethical, natural way of producing food without debilitating the environment.

What is Organic?

Certified Organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMOs (genetically modified organisms). It is an innovative method of farming and production – and is increasingly recognised as being on the leading edge of food technology into the future. Organic is not just chemical free by testing. It is about the way your food is grown and handled. The whole system is linked - Soil. Plants. Animals. Food. People. Environment.

What Is Certification?

Organic certification is when an organic certifying group audits a business' methods to ensure that they comply with the guidelines on organic farming and processing. Standards to achieve this are internationally recognised, and are assured through annual audits of all certified operators by an independent third party auditor.

Australian Certified Organic Logo

AUSTRALIAN CERTIFIED ORGANIC (ACO) is Australia's largest certifier for organic and biodynamic produce. It is part of the non-profit Biological Farmers of Australia Co-Op and provides certification services to operators from all sectors of the organic industry. Certification ensures compliance with national production standards and allows trace back of all products to their origin.

What Pesticides are in our Food?

The following table shows the pesticides which are contained in our food and is an excerpt from the 20th Australian Total Diet Survey. The Total Diet Survey is coordinated by the Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA). It is conducted in cooperation with the States and the Northern Territory health departments. Whilst the quantities shown in this table fall within the 'safe' range as specified by ANZFA, it is disturbing to note, in many cases, the higher levels being consumed by children, as compared to adults.
